Are There Days When Cupping Is Prohibited?
The Islamic Ruling and a Scholarly Analysis Between Sunnah and Innovation
Cupping is a legitimate form of treatment established in the Prophetic tradition of Muhammad ﷺ, and its virtue is confirmed in authentic hadith. However, the question of whether cupping is forbidden on certain days is one of the most commonly confused topics — mixing authentic and weak narrations, and blending Islamic scholarship with popular folk belief. This article provides a documented, scholarly answer to the question: are there days when cupping is forbidden in Islamic law?
What Is Cupping in Islam?
Cupping is an established Prophetic remedy. It is confirmed in both Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim that the Prophet ﷺ used cupping, recommended it, and described it as one of the best forms of treatment. It is a permissible therapeutic practice with no scholarly disagreement on its basic legitimacy.
Narrations Forbidding Cupping on Specific Days
It has become common among people to avoid cupping on certain days, such as:
- Saturday
- Wednesday
- Certain other days of the week
All narrations forbidding cupping on these days are either weak or fabricated, and cannot be used as religious evidence. This was explicitly stated by a large number of classical and contemporary scholars.
The Correct Islamic Ruling on Cupping Days
The established juristic conclusion:
- There is no day that is Islamically forbidden for cupping
- Cupping is permissible on all days of the week
- Cupping is permissible on all days of the month
- It is recommended in the middle of the Hijri month
- The best days are the 17th, 19th, and 21st of the Hijri month
Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "I have never heard any scholar dislike cupping on any particular day."
The Difference Between Islamic and Medical Timing for Cupping
First: Islamic Timing
Cupping is divided into two types:
Prophetic (Preventive) Cupping is preferred on:
- The prophetic days (17th – 19th – 21st)
- The middle of the Hijri month
- When the moon is full
Second: Medical Timing
- Therapeutic medical cupping is performed when there is a need
- It is not tied to specific days
- Its goal is to treat an existing health condition
Important Note
No authentic narration from the Prophet ﷺ prohibits cupping on any specific day of the week or month. Everything reported to that effect cannot be used as evidence. The default ruling for cupping is permissibility whenever a person needs it.
